The United States and Cuba: An Embargo for the Ages Essay -- Essays P
The United States and Cuba: An Embargo for the Ages Cubaââ¬â¢s colorful history can be documented to before the days of the American Revolution in 1776, but today, American policy directly affects many Cubansââ¬â¢ lifestyles because of a nearly 45-year-old trade embargo that has been placed on the island nation. It is crucial to analyze the development of Cuba and its neighboring island nations in order to discern the reasons for Cubaââ¬â¢s current political situation with the United States. The following paper will discuss the events that shaped Cuba and larger Caribbean nations like Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica; next, a detailed description of Cubaââ¬â¢s turbulent history will help in explaining the Cuban transformation into a socialist economy; then, a detailed account of the U.S. embargo on Cuba will document the ups and downs of the policy all the way to the present day; finally, the current news surrounding American-Cuban relations will depict the most recent happenings in the ongoing disputes between t he two nations. Before analyzing the situation leading up to the Cuban embargo, it is important to look at the history of the development of the Caribbean as a whole. This means analyzing the factors that led to the modern development of islands like Hispaniola (consisting of Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and of course Cuba. It is also essential to observe and examine the economic and social changes that resulted from these islandsââ¬â¢ shifts from colonial outposts to independent producers. It seems important to look at all of these islands separately, as each one has its own unique background that explains its place in the world today. These islands also share many strikingly similar characteristics. Up... ...n that U.S. businessmen want to trade with Cuba. The problem lies behind the interests that drive the U.S. government, and until those interests are satisfied, it is doubtful that this embargo will go anywhere anytime soon. Swot Analysis of It in Ryanair
RYANAIR by: Simon Schuster 08707031 BAHTM Since its beginnings in 1985, Ryanair has created a niche market for a ââ¬Ëno frillsââ¬â¢ airline based upon the model they adopted from Southwest Airlines. Ryanair is now the most popular (in terms of passenger traffic) low cost airline in Europe. Ryanairââ¬â¢s primary model is low cost and IT has been influential to this. Today, 99% of Ryanair passengers check-in online (the other 1% being a small number of self-check-in kiosks in Stansted) and the same ratio applies to sales, 99% of which are acquired through www. ryanair. om. We are going to conduct an analysis of the implementation of IT in their strategy. The analysis tool being used will be SWOT. Strengths One of the strengths Ryanair have with regards to IT is their website. It accounts for almost the entirety of their sales. As well as this it provides a wealth of data on where people travel? How often? How many bags? These are all instrumental pieces of information that hel p manage operation. Using this information will allow Ryanair to boost the accuracy how it distributes its fleet across their destinations.Another use of this information would be how they control queues for passengers checking-in luggage as they would have the exact data from the online booking. As of August 2011, www. ryanair. com was the most visited airline website in Europe. This statistic shows that the website has a distinct advantage above their competitors in acquiring revenue from advertisements. As well as this, it shows a trend that travellers visit their site the most whether they go directly there or are referred to it because of their cheap prices.Aside from their website, they operate a single model fleet comprising of 275 Boeing 737-800s. This makes repairs and diagnostics universal which allows them to use the same scale to track and monitor the performance and safety of their aircrafts. This again would considerably lower costs. Weaknesses Ryanairââ¬â¢s website has often come in for criticism because of its misleading prices. They regularly advertise ââ¬Ëpromotionsââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëoffersââ¬â¢ at rock bottom prices, however they donââ¬â¢t include the related charges and ââ¬Ëoptionalââ¬â¢ fees. These charges and fees being, using any payment method other than Ryanair credit. Another possible weakness is their reluctance to adopt the mobile boarding pass. As many other airlines have this facility as another way to aid their customersââ¬â¢ experience, Ryanair seem to think less of it with Michael Oââ¬â¢Leary saying ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢ve printed out your piece of paper from the website, what does the mobile phone do for you? Nothing. â⬠. I can only presume this is because it will decrease the amount people being charged for the many fines Ryanair have in place for their customers.A further weakness is the fact they have decided to charge â⠬2. 99 to download their app for iPad and iPhone. This is in contrast to other airlines who released their apps well in advance of Ryanair but chose to offer it free to customers with similar or more functionality like the mobile boarding pass mentioned above. Opportunities Ryanair has many opportunities to grow through IT. Being the most visited airline website, advertising is a huge opportunity to gain revenue. As well as this, it presents an opportunity to combine flights with other components of travel like hotels and car rental. They currently have a relationship with Hertz and also have a hotel booking function through www. ryanairhotels. com. As well as this they have relationships with other travel accommodation providers. There is an opportunity there to offer a package deal where customers will be able to purchase a holiday in full from Ryanair. This would be useful to customers as well as Ryanair.Ryanair tested the use of mobile phones during flights which were received well by passengers as well as the airline themselves. However, they failed to reach an agreement with communications company OnAir. This is something that certainly will be the norm in years to come and Iââ¬â¢m sure Ryanair would like to get there first as profits from high margin calls and texts could be lucrative. Because of a long relationship with Boeing, as well as using the same model planes across their fleet, Ryanair can provide Boeing with large amounts of valuable data.Data that would help develop Boeings future models and in turn would provide improvements for Ryanairââ¬â¢s new planes. There is also a possibility Ryanair could install monitors on their planes that display sponsored advertisements for the duration of the flight. These ads could be related to the planes destination as well as Ryanairââ¬â¢s own adverts. Threats Ryanairââ¬â¢s biggest threat, among all airlines, is the rising price of fuel. Aside from this, they could face sanctions for their misleading adverts on their website.Another threat of theirs is hackers, who co uld interrupt their website causing loss in revenue as well as customer dissatisfaction if online check-in was unavailable. An extreme case of this would be terrorists hacked into aviation authorities and caused an international threat. There is always the threat of more and more low cost airlines doing business, however even with others developing better apps and having higher standards of customer relations, Ryanair seem unfazed as they are ruthless in their low cost model and continue to be the cheapest. SummaryIn conclusion, Ryanairââ¬â¢s IT strategy and how they implement it on their business is working well for them. The key asset being their website, through which almost all their revenue comes from. Even though competitors may have slight advantages in other IT components, Ryanair has the most efficient model and their brand as the ââ¬Ëno frillsââ¬â¢ airline is evidently the most recognisable across Europe. With a website with such high traffic and putting the major ity of the pre-flight responsibility on the customer, itââ¬â¢s clear to see how they use IT to their advantage. References

The Education Concept Of Education Essay - 1589 Words
The American Education System provides an equal opportunity for all children in the United States to get a quality education. Although it is not completely uniform across the country, with every state making itââ¬â¢s own guidelines, everyone is still presented with a chance to attend a public school from kindergarten through twelfth grade. This enables all children with an education to advance further in life. For giving everyone that opportunity this system should be praised, but in the system it also has many flaws. schools in wealthy communities are better than those in poor communities, higher income schools are simply better at preparing their students for their future. Question: Discuss about theProfessional Developmentfor Global Economy. Answer: Introduction The development of the global economy has increased the demand of the consumers all over the world. The increased demand has therefore, led to the creation of many new industries. One of these industries is the Event Management sector, which has become a demanding line globally. The function of the event management industries is to organize various events and programs in various sectors and reducing the work of the organizations planning to organize such events. The study will therefore, evaluate the various standards related to event management industries so that it can be easier to analyze ones own SWOT Analysis and thereby understanding the points, which can be essential to meet the selection criteria to get employed in a reputed event management company. Entry 2 In this part of the study, a self-analysis will be done with respect to the industry standards working in an event management companies. However, it is essential to know the industry standards in event management. Event management is the implication of project management for the establishment of any events such as conferences, ceremonies, parties, conventions etc. It can act as a marketing strategy through which an organization can motivate its employees and create a close relation with the stakeholders. There exist few standards, which these event management groups and the managers need to maintain in order to achieve its organizational goals. These standards comprise of delivering the highest quality of service to its clients. The supervision of the events from time to time organized by the firm is an essential function thereby, reducing any problems in the event. The management of the cost, staff and wastage needs to be underlined so that the profits can be maintained (Allen, O'to ole Harris and McDonnell 2012). A healthy relation with the suppliers is crucial as they provide all the resources. The implementation of the improvements received from the customer feedback is essential. The most important standard includes concentrating on the needs of the customer as every customer has different needs altogether. The provision of brochures and management covers to the clients advertises their service better. The most vital standards pertaining to this industry is running its business in such a way so that the society, the environment and the economy remain in a sustainable position. If the organization functions keeping the above mentioned factors healthy, then it can gain profit. The customers are also an important factor as because of them these organizations survive. The key to become an efficient event manager is by complying with the standards of the industry and therefore, it is essential to make a SWOT Analysis of my own self so that the pros and cons can be identified. SWOT Analysis Strength: According to the given standards, it is seen that the strengths are having the ability to mix with people very easily and motivating the colleagues so as to bring in a harmonious atmosphere. The ability to mix with people helps in creating good public relations. Another strength is the urge to learn more and thus will be helpful in being updated with the changing requirements. Weakness: There exists a lot of weakness like leadership qualities and lacking the power to convince people. The other weakness includes the lack of experience about the event management system. The ability to be patient and get the work done also requires attention. Opportunity: The opportunities include the chance to undertake extra trainings about the functioning of the industry thereby gaining proficiency (Masterman 2014). Other opportunities involve the gaining from the on the job training and thereby learning a lot from it. Threat: The threat involves the high competition rate for the position of the job as there are other candidates good enough to apply for the job. The threat also includes the changing needs of the customers and so it is essential gain knowledge from time to time. Entry 4 Part 1: Career Action Plan The position, I feel that is best suited according to the qualification is the post of an event manager. The requirements of being an event manager involve the analysis of a few steps to develop a proper action plan so that a good job of an event manager is achieved. The components involving the career development include the following factors: My Profile: A proper self-development plan with proper information is helpful to the new ones to understand their capabilities. The initiation of steps to identify the interests regarding the event and their skills and values will help to improve the quality of work. My Progress: This system will be effective to develop self-development information to assess the experience and achievements during the past years so as to gain knowledge. My Goals and Plans: The development of self- assessment abilities to establish their abilities and information about career development to motivate them to investigate their learning opportunities and work options in future (Puymir et al 2016). My Review: The assessment of the work done till now is of vital importance so that transformations can be made according to the growing opportunities in the future. The career action plan will therefore include the creation of new ideas, which can develop the ideologies, which can be helpful to create an edge so that one can achieve the post within the stipulated time overcoming the other rivals. The chance of getting a job in the event Management Company may require references and therefore, the need to contact some existing employee or knowing anyone from the management is necessary to elevate the chances of getting a job in the company. Part 2 The chances of getting a job also depend upon looking at the criteria of the firms operating in the event management industry. The selection criteria of an industry are an important part of being selected. The selection criteria is a crucial part of an organization and the criteria differs from firms to firms (Singh 2016). There are primarily four criteria, which every firm tries to follow and therefore, these four criterions will be assessed to find out whether the job of an event manager is achievable. One of the most important aspects to get a job is the verbal and written communication power of an employee. Thereby, the ability to draft a proper and clear documentation is essential to communicate and create a good knowledge to the stakeholders. The ability of wring and communing orally is an efficient part and thus it can be an essential for me to get the job. The ability to initiate strategies so that points like the prioritizing the work and completing the task in the assigned deadline is necessary. This ability is present in the potential employees will be beneficial as the knowledge about the work and getting it done on time makes an employee more effective to get the job. The internal skills present in a potential employee are an important factor because the ability to communicate with the various people involved in the business like the stakeholders or the clients is an important factor. The ability to communicate and instruct their duties is very much present and therefore it acts as an USP to get the job (Patterson and Getz 2013). The ability to work as a team is there as during the college many projects and workshops were done to create a sense of unity among a team so that a work can be done better. Thus, this part is present to get the work done and thus, the chances of getting the job become higher when the communicating and the decision enrolment power exits according to the selection criteria. The movement of the Japanese Yen relative to the US dollar
Abstract Over past three decades, Japanese Yen has fluctuated significantly against the U.S dollar. It was stronger during the 80s to the early 90s, but this value has been deteriorating since mid 90s to date.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The movement of the Japanese Yen relative to the US dollar specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Japanese government intervened in many occasions in their foreign exchange market to attain unjust advantage in the global world market. However, these interventions were only felt in the short run but failed to avert the direction of the Yen in the long-run. In addition, these interventions had negligible effect on the prices of Japanese commodities in the U.S market. Introduction The current global financial market is dominated by allegations that some countries are trying to manipulate their exchange rates using unjust means. The major culprit at the present is China, although the s ame allegations were made against Japan (Vikas Yan 2006). Governments often intervene in the currency market by buying foreign exchange-mostly the major global currencies- in order to increase the demand for these currencies and consequently their values relative to their domestic currency. On the other hand, they can sell these major foreign currencies to reduce their demand in the currency market thus increasing the value of their domestic currency. In the case of Japan, it has often bought U.S. dollars from its local exporters in exchange for their domestic currency (Japanese Yen) and utilizes the dollars to purchase American securities and liquid assets (Cashin et al. 2004). U.S government has a lot of interest in the global currency manipulations, interventions and unjust alignment, since it has considerable repercussions on their economy. Unfair manipulation of the exchange rates to underrate global currencies can raise the US trade deficit, increase their dependency on forei gn investors to finance this deficit, thus affects their interest rates and their competitive advantage in the global trade. Japan has always timed when the dollarââ¬â¢s value is declining relative to Yen to purchase U.S securities and liquid assets. The main aim of doing this was to stabilize the value of Yen and preventing the prices of their exports from increasing in US markets and to maintain their exportsââ¬â¢ profitability (Vikas Yan 2006). Yenââ¬â¢s ascension started significantly started after the signing of the Plaza Accord in 1985 by the major industrial economies at that time. It marked two distinct periods. The first part was between 1980s to early 90s where recession led to a very strong yen. The second section lies between mid 90s to date where the real exchange rate of the Yen has been depreciating significantly resulting to a deteriorated balance of trade between Japan and U.S (Rasmus Hutchinson, 2003).Advertising Looking for essay on business econo mics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Japanese interventions in the foreign exchange market Global financial analyst argued that Japan has undervalued their currency more than 20%. If this is the case, then it gives Japanese manufacturers upper hand pricewise over their American competitors. The greatest victim of the Yen undervaluation is the U.S automobile industry. The headquarter of the U.S automobile industry claimed that these gave price advantage of approximately 4000 dollars per car manufactured in Japan as compared to U.S . It enhanced the sale of Japanese cars in the American market. Figure 1 in the appendix shows the trend of the Japanese real effective exchange rate relative to the dollar from 1973 to 2006 (Vikas Yan 2006). International economists argue that currency interventions for large economies with floating exchange rates such as Japan only works for a short run and have diminutive effect on the long run. Some experts believe that even without manipulations, Japans share of the foreign exchange will still remain since it earns by investing in the US securities and other liquid assets. In 2006, Japan earned more ($40 billion) on its total investment in US than what the US earned on its investment in Japan. Japanese government interventions in the currency market took place in late 70s to 2004. Since then, Japanese government has never intervened very much in the foreign exchange market to affect the value of the dollar as illustrated in figure 2 in the appendix (Vikas Yan 2006). Currency values and Trade This section explains the impact of the yen-dollar exchange rates on the imports and exports. Theoretically, Japanese interventions in the foreign exchange market was aimed at undervaluing Yen, thus makes their exports cheaper. This should have enabled Japan to either reduce the price of their exports or maintain it while making more profits. Lower export prices and higher import prices r esults into surplus in the balance of trade and therefore increases economic growth. In reality, the functioning of the foreign exchange market is different from the theoretical perspective. To be specific, the long run relation between government interventions and foreign exchange market is difficult to demonstrate practically (Koujianou Knetter 1997). Japanese automobile manufacturers and other exporters to the U.S market do not adjust their prices in response to short run fluctuations in the exchange rates. There prices are set according to the prevailing commodity market conditions and long-run financial market conditions.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The movement of the Japanese Yen relative to the US dollar specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For example, between 1994 to early 1995, Japanese Yen rose by 34% against the dollar meaning that the prices of Japanese goods in U.S market should have followed the same trend. However, Toyota sticker prices only appreciated by 2% while the prices of Sony TV sets dropped by 15%. Conclusion Since early 70s to date, the value of Japanese Yen has fluctuated significantly against the U.S dollar. The value of Yen was relatively stable during 70s to early 80s. Yenââ¬â¢s ascension started significantly after the signing of the Plaza Accord in 1985 by the major industrial economies at that time. The fluctuations in the value of yen forced the Japanese government to intervene in the foreign exchange market. However, these interventions only succeeded in the short run but failed to avert the direction of the Yen in the long-run. References Cashin, P., Luis F. C., Ratna, S. 2004.
